Each spring, homeschool families across Pennsylvania have the opportunity to come together for the annual CHAP Convention, and, for many, it becomes a highlight of their educational year. While the vendor hall and displays of curriculum often draw our initial excitement, one of the most valuable aspects of the Convention is the chance to learn directly from experts about the legal side of homeschooling in Pennsylvania.

Navigating state homeschool laws can feel overwhelming, especially for new families or those transitioning between grade levels. At the Convention, experienced speakers walk parents through exactly what the law requires—and, just as importantly, what it does not. Overcompliance is a common concern, with many families unknowingly doing far more than necessary out of fear or uncertainty. By attending seminars focused on Pennsylvania’s homeschool law, parents can gain clarity, simplify their approach, and homeschool with confidence.

The Convention also provides updates on proposed legislation that could affect homeschooling. Advocates and watchdog organizations often present current bills under consideration in the state legislature, helping parents understand both the progress being made and the challenges that may be ahead. Whether it’s positive reform or potential restrictions, being informed allows homeschool families to respond wisely and support efforts that protect their freedom to educate at home. This year, I’m excited to hear from one of the biggest homeschool advocates in the country, Heidi St. John.

Another benefit of attending is the opportunity to connect with organizations that offer legal support to homeschoolers. Representatives from these groups are typically available to answer questions, explain membership benefits, and provide guidance for unique or challenging situations. Whether it’s preparing for an end-of-year portfolio review or handling a misunderstanding with a school district, knowing where to turn for help brings peace of mind.

In a world where laws and attitudes toward homeschooling continue to shift, staying informed is more than just practical—it’s essential. The annual CHAP Convention offers a rare and valuable chance to meet face-to-face with those who are working every day to defend and explain our rights as homeschoolers. For many families, this aspect of the Convention alone is worth the trip.
