Tell us a little bit about your family dynamics.
We (Andrew and Jenée) are high school sweethearts from Arizona. We moved to Pennsylvania less than two years ago so that Andrew could train for ministry under a pastor who has served the same congregation for 40 years. Prior to our first child being born, Jenée became a full-time housewife. Our kids are being raised in a completely different environment, from sunshine and cactus to snow and green foliage! We are grateful to raise our children in a rural area. The worship of God is a central part of our home life.
How long have you been homeschooling? What was one of the main reasons you chose to homeschool?
We have been homeschooling for about one year now. We believe that homeschooling is a key part of fulfilling Deuteronomy 6:5-9.
In what activities does your family participate?
We enjoy getting outside as a family, whether that is going on a walk, playing at the park, or grilling by the lake near our home. The kids love books, Veggie Tales, and singing. We also enjoy getting together with other Christian families for fellowship.
What have been your most helpful resources?
So far, the most helpful resource has been the book Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. (Obviously, this is second to the Word of God!)
What educational philosophy/curriculum do you follow?
Since both Joseph and Hannah are under six years old, Jenée is currently focusing on teaching them the fundamentals of reading, writing, and basic mathematics. We plan to start a more formal curriculum soon.
What has been one of the highlights for you in homeschooling your children?
We enjoy being able to watch their progress firsthand and are grateful for the amount of time we are able to spend with them weekly. Also, we love hearing them randomly sing Psalms and hymns.
What was your favorite field trip(s)?
The kids enjoyed riding the Strasburg Rail Road in Lancaster; the Amish make mean soft pretzels! Also, Joseph and Hannah loved spending time at Roba’s Family Farms.
What was one of the funniest things to happen during a homeschool day?
Andrew occasionally calls Joseph James “JJ.” Recently, Joseph said, “You can call me ‘Cowboy Joe.’” (We may have to buy him Ariat boots and a bolo tie.)
What have you found to be a challenge in homeschooling? Any tips in dealing with that challenge?
At times, it can be a challenge juggling homeschooling the older children while also taking care of the younger children. The second youngest typically wants to participate, which is a blessing, but this can sometimes be a distraction. Jenée has found that while the younger kids are taking a nap, it is easier to use that block of time to focus on school work.
What advice would you give to someone who has just begun homeschooling?
Celebrate small wins, keep the end goal in mind, and view homeschooling as a service to the Lord. You are not perfect, but you were designed specifically by our Heavenly Father to guide and instruct your children.
