Living in the time amidst social issues and moral decadence creates a worrisome to us as conservative parents. Children are a blessing from God and we as parents are required to steward our role as God-fearing people with high regard of responsibility. Surrendering our children into the system, especially to the system that is breaking down in today’s society, is concerning. The abuse of the parents’ trust is spreading like a wildfire done by school boards all around the nation. The incident is not exclusive to the public school system, it also happens in various private Christian schools per our personal experience.
Children are just a blank canvas, they also like a sponge, absorb anything. If we as parents do not educate our children with godly values, somebody will “educate” them with ungodly values. There is no such of thing like letting the children learn by themselves, they watch or observe and copy. They will learn at home or on the loose. When the school system falls into a big abyss, homeschooling is the answer.
Homeschooling is a challenge. It is a true challenge especially for a family without familiarity with the practices and has limited resources. While financial strength is one critical factor to consider on top of the other things, that includes the language barrier for parents who are not English native speakers. At least, those are the issues we as a family have been struggling with since the beginning of homeschooling.
After we decided to homeschool our children, we found ourselves dealing with the tasks as an independent educational entity. Without enrolling in any of the homeschool organizations, in the first year of homeschooling we had to structure a learning system, made a syllabus, and created extra activities for our children. Acting as a home teacher is beyond our past experience in our original culture, out of necessity we overcome the obstacles day by day.
Books are essential for education, but they are a costly investment for us to make. However, facing economic and financial hardship, spending money on even second-hand books requires a selective decision consequently creating bottlenecking learning process for the children.
One day some friends shared about CHAP Foundation, and we tried to apply for a scholarship. We are grateful for the approval of our request and received a scholarship which we used toward books and school supplies for our children. It was such a blessing to have CHAP Foundation that wholeheartedly serves the needs of struggling families like us. We continue to pray and bless CHAP Foundation’s mission, prayerfully one day we can pay it forward to other families as well.
God bless.
