Brad and Kathy Bastedo have been homeschooling their son for 11 years, believing that Christian homeschooling is an excellent way to train and raise the next generation of Christians. This is a unique opportunity to provide a Christian education tailored to the needs and abilities of each child. Brad is the Senior Chief Deputy Public Defender of Bucks County, and he is active in his church teaching Bible study and serving as an elder. Before their son came along, Kathy worked for an insurance company and earned a business degree. In the past she served as a Sunday school teacher and VBS director.
Rick and Barb Beideman have been homeschooling their two sons since 2000. Their approach has been eclectic, and God has blessed them with many wonderful opportunities to grow and learn in this homeschool adventure. They started a support group in Pittsburgh called FINS. Barb has also been an evaluator since 2001. She enjoys providing encouragement and support to fellow homeschoolers. She has taught many co-op classes, presented on homeschool-related topics, and coordinated various clubs, such as Pioneer clubs, book clubs, a 4-H club, and the FINS Gavel Club. Rick is the principal software developer at ChemImage. He started the FINS robotics team (with much help) and has also run a literary club for homeschool teens since 2008. Rick and Barb serve together on the CHAP Board.
Rick and Barb both graduated from Grove City College, where Rick majored in Christian ministries and computer systems, and Barb majored in elementary education. They married three weeks after graduation. After five years in the work force, God called them to join staff with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. They moved to Clarion and served as campus staff for five years. During this time they had their two sons and both earned master’s degrees in library science. They now volunteer with InterVarsity at Carnegie Mellon University and enjoy being active in their church. Rick heads the outreach committee, and Barb teaches in the ESL ministry.
Beth & Paul Bucher are the newest members of the CHAP Advisory Board, officially starting January 2017.
After observing the importance parents played in the lives of their children while working with the youth at their church, they started rethinking their plans for their oldest child as she approached school age. The Lord was subtly working in their lives at that time and Paul & Beth decided to start their homeschooling journey in 2003. Today they believe that it is the parents’ responsibility to both train their children academically and disciple them to be followers of Christ. Looking back, they reflect that homeschooling has become a way of life, where the rewards far outweigh the challenges faced.
Beth & Paul met in college and married shortly after graduation in 1991. They have seven children, ranging from college age to preschool. Beth has a degree in elementary education and has served in various children and youth ministries. Paul has a degree in computer science and works as a software architect. They look forward to continuing their homeschooling journey and seeing what the Lord has in store for them.
Patrick and Maria Pietrak have been married since 1990. When God blessed them with their first child, they had never heard of home education. After being a part of both public and private schools, and due to a God-ordained appointment, they met members of CHAP who gently guided them in discovering the vision and joys of parent-led, Christ-centered home education and discipleship. They began that journey with their four children in 2003. Patrick and Maria are committed to encouraging and supporting home educating families. Patrick and Maria have been serving CHAP as volunteers and in their local education co-op leadership since 2005. They began serving on the CHAP Board in 2013.
